Why Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone is a nation of extraordinary resilience, rich culture, and youthful energy. Yet, decades of civil war and economic hardship have left deep scars on its communities, especially among young people. Today, over 60% of Sierra Leone’s population is under the age of 35, making youth both the country’s greatest challenge and its greatest opportunity.

Many young people face barriers such as limited access to quality education, high unemployment, and the lingering effects of trauma. Without mentorship, counselling, and practical skills, too many are left vulnerable to cycles of poverty and hopelessness. But Sierra Leone’s youth are also resourceful, creative, and determined — with the right support, they can become the driving force behind national transformation.

Bright Horizons Youth Development Organization (BHYDO) was born out of this reality. Our founder, Mariama Marie Kargbo, carries Sierra Leone in her heart and recognizes the urgent need to invest in its young generation. By focusing on Sierra Leone, BHYDO is not only addressing immediate challenges but also planting seeds of long‑term change—nurturing leaders who will rebuild communities, strengthen democracy, and inspire hope for generations to come.
